The role
To carefully select and underwrite risks, in a cost effective manner and in accordance within granted authority levels, to ensure the Political & Credit Risk class is profitable and business targets are met.
Key accountabilities
- Generate a material contribution to the underwriting of the Political & Credit Risk portfolio whilst maintaining high standards on new and renewal business
- Responsible for documenting underwriting rationale and decisions to maintain a record of why the risk was bound and complete the associated tools for data capture
- Develop strong, long-term relationships with brokers and clients to profitably grow a book of business and provide excellent customer service
- Review and assess wordings and underwriting criteria with Legal & Compliance
- To calculate possible risk and determine appropriate insurance premiums using risk information, pricing model, other statistics and own judgment within underwriting authority level, making necessary referrals in accordance with company policy
- Preparation of reports for internal reporting
- Represent HDI at client meetings and insurance conferences, and deliver presentations to brokers and clients as required
- Participate in special underwriting projects, and Branch-wide projects as needed
- Nurture a culture of strong collaboration with Political and Credit Risk and broadly HDI Global Specialty Group colleagues around the world
- Communicate risk appetite and HDI value proposition to brokers and clients
- Provide technical underwriting expertise / guidance to less experienced underwriting staff on the coverage, risk selection, and market
Skills & experience
- Experience in the credit and political markets, gained within an insurer, broker, bank, or relevant financial institution.
- Strong credit analysis skills, including assessment of obligor creditworthiness, financial statements, transaction structures, and key risk drivers.
- Ability to make disciplined decisions and present clear, evidence-based credit recommendations.
- Good understanding of political, economic, sovereign, and market-driven risks.
- Relationship management experience with brokers, clients, lenders, syndicate partners, or other market participants.
- Familiarity with credit documentation, insurance wordings, and/or transferable experience in legal, credit, or structured finance documentation.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
