The role
- As a Senior Underwriter you will develop and maintain a profitable book of business in line with business plan.
- Have a significant impact on new business development and contribute to new ideas, strategy and project required.
- Provide a monitoring, oversight and referral function for more junior members of the team.
Key accountabilities
- Acting as a senior market-facing representative of HDI, maintain strong broker and client relationships, reinforce HDI’s position as a long-term underwriting partner, and contribute to the continued development of the proposition.
- Identify and originate new underwriting opportunities within appetite, supporting HDI’s position as a technically driven and reliable market.
- Represent HDI at market meetings, broker briefings, client visits, and industry events to maintain visibility and credibility.
- Commercial acumen within the market
- Demonstrated success in new business development and broker relationship management.
- Excels at building strong internal and external relationships. You'll leverage your negotiation skills to drive results and independently evaluate complex risks
- Building strong partnerships, uncovering opportunities, and driving profitable growth in challenging markets.
- Play a key role in driving new business growth by proactively developing and maintaining strong broker relationships
- Proactively source and develop new business, building strong broker relationships through regular face‑to‑face engagement
- Utilising current relationships and fostering new ones between clients and brokers
- Work collaboratively with business partners (customers, claims, risk consulting, Head Office, finance, network, policy wordings, compliance and other Product Lines) and colleagues to successfully deliver HDI’s product and proposition.
- Analyse existing processes to identify potential bottlenecks, improvement opportunities and risks, as well as deriving appropriate measures for process optimization.
- Comply with HDI-UK & Ireland branch and Global policies, underwriting guidelines and underwriting authority.
- Represent the Team and actively participate on internal Branch and Head office sponsored forums, committees and projects.
- Proactively participate in projects or other initiatives designed to improve the effectiveness or efficiency of the Team and / or Branch.
- Undertake any other tasks as requested by the Director, to ensure that the team achieves its objectives.
Skills & experience
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; comfortable with phone & face to face discussions with underwriters, brokers and other technical colleagues
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders and external clients.
- 5+ years of professional experience in Liability
- Has a detailed understanding of the insurance market locally, nationally and internationally.
- Understands Clients’ businesses and their needs and challenges around insurance.
- Has a strong knowledge of Competitors’ strategies, strengths and weaknesses and how their products compare to HDI’s product offering.
- Has a strong knowledge of key brokers and their marketing and placement strategies.
