The role
The role is responsible for supporting underwriting operations across UK&I business, ensuring accurate and timely policy issuance, high-quality underwriting data management, and compliance with underwriting appetite, multinational guidelines, and regulatory requirements. The role works closely with underwriters, producing offices, brokers, co-insurers, fronting partners, and international network offices to deliver effective policy administration, data integrity, and service standards.
The role also supports international programmes, operational administration, and continuous improvement initiatives, contributes to projects aimed at improving efficiency, and provides guidance and support to Assistant Underwriting Technicians. A strong focus on data quality, governance, risk and compliance, and collaboration across teams is essential to success in the role.
Key accountabilities
Policy Issuance & Compliance
Ensure all UK&I policies and related documentation are issued accurately and on time in line with underwriting appetite, multinational guidelines, and regulatory requirements. Liaise with producing offices, fronting partners, underwriters, brokers, and co-insurers to validate data accuracy and meet local policy requirements. Identify and escalate issues promptly to the Underwriting Ops Team Lead or Senior Underwriting Technicians and ensure compliance with UK, overseas, and HDI UK&I regulations.
Underwriting Data Management
Ensure underwriting data is complete and accurate through liaison with producing offices, brokers, co-insurers, underwriters, Senior Underwriting Technicians, and other HDI offices. Record data promptly across core systems including Geras, Pool Re, One Flow, Global Network Portal, ELTO, ARGOS, E-Accounting, and E-Bix. Issue and validate Requests of Coverage (RoC), monitor and resolve data quality issues, maintain accurate electronic records for audit and regulatory purposes, and process entries including policy creation, premiums, endorsements, terrorism, co-insurance, reinsurance, taxes, deductions, expenses, and fees.
International Programmes & Operational Support
Support Senior Underwriting Technicians in liaising with servicing offices and regional hubs within the Global Network. Validate instructions, ensure timely completion of servicing office actions, and resolve discrepancies in local information. Administer bordereaux from MGAs and TPAs, respond to e-Accounting and credit control queries, and coordinate corrections with underwriting teams. Assess risk and determine premiums for Employee Liability and Terrorism within authority limits, using calculation tools, actuarial data, and professional judgement, referring where required.
Data Quality, Reporting & Governance
Produce regular reports from the Global Network Portal and Business Objects to identify pending queries and missing information, and provide claims data to external clients. Ensure agreed service standards are met, report service failures promptly, and complete departmental returns such as ELTO, Pool Re, and audit requirements accurately and on time.
Procedures, Training & Continuous Improvement
Review and update procedures to ensure they remain fit for purpose and identify opportunities for process improvement. Check and authorise data processed by Assistant Underwriting Technicians and provide on-the-job training and support to new joiners. Participate in projects and initiatives aimed at improving departmental and branch efficiency and challenge existing processes constructively.
People, Risk & Compliance
Lead by example by promoting diversity and inclusion and supporting a safe working environment through health and safety due diligence. Fulfil individual risk and compliance obligations, support adherence to Group and regulatory guidelines, and proactively report incidents or breaches. Undertake additional duties as requested by the Underwriting Ops Team Lead.
Skills & experience
Skills, Qualifications & Experience
- ACII studies required, minimum CII Certificate level, with A-Level or equivalent qualifications or equivalent professional experience
- Experience across multiple lines of business with a strong understanding of insurance cover and terminology
- Knowledge of underwriting policy construction and the ability to interpret underwriting files and identify required data
- Strong systems knowledge, including bespoke company platforms for data capture and monitoring
- Awareness of the financial impact of technical data processed
- Ability to organise workload effectively to meet agreed service standards
- Deadline-focused and resilient under pressure, with the ability to manage time-sensitive tasks
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Highly numerate with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills, confident in liaising with multiple internal and external stakeholders
- Competent user of Microsoft Excel and Word
- Adaptable and open to change, with a proactive approach to new processes and systems
